The Legion of One Thousand Men began in June of 1973. Sister Mary Alice Ferrara and Sister Mary Clare Bergeron contacted every parish priest in Manchester and the surrounding area. They explained the objective to the pastors and asked him to submit 10 names of pious men he thought might be interested in joining this organization. The priests responded and our Sisters sent invitations to these possible members to come to the Monastery and learn about the Legion. It was a cold, rainy afternoon on that June day, nevertheless 100 men showed up. The Sisters explained that this strictly spiritual organization did not have any membership fees, no monthly meetings, no fund raising projects. The purpose of forming this society was to encourage the men to come and spend time with the Lord in prayer and thanksgiving once a week.
